Nature is my starting point because it is a manifestation of meticulous organization, despite its deceptively apparent uncertainty. Repetition of similar, but organically varied objects often plays a large part in my work. I am interested in the order that has been discovered and then projected back onto nature by science. I use natural materials that often have had a history before I have the chance to claim them and project a new purpose on them. I use these materials in combination with less tangible concepts such as, the passage of time, natural gradients, or the challenges of communication.
More specific recent studies have to do with text as a medium for communication, or as a catalyst for miscommunication. Book Contour deals with this by replacing the no-longer legible text with imagery that has various references from graph to landscape. The work still has a similar aesthetic to my previous work, but the content has changed to talk more specifically about communication or lack there of. In Pin Paper with Text, the text is legible and there are many languages represented. The pages are stitched together with a pattern of straight pins with follow the path of the Silk Route, one of the first significant meetings of east and west, and the start to certain languages dissolving.
